The threat to IP security from hackers extends to VoIP
The rapid growth of VoIP and IP Telephony for business users has put the spotlight on security issues facing enterprise adopters of these technologies. One set of experts tell us that the first step is to identify the nature of the risks involved, and the second is to set about nullifying them. Who would have thought of that?
“The hackers have figured out how to make money out of VoIP.” That’s one assessment of the state of play where security in VoIP and IP Telephony networks is concerned. It happens to be the view of data and security specialists at Dimension Data who see this as a growing issue, with the number of enterprise VoIP deployments set to overtake traditional telephony deployments at some point in the near future.
The security threats facing VoIP networks range from theft of service and fraudulent mis-use to commercial espionage and malicious attacks. All of the risks for so long associated with computer networks, in other words. But just as IP voice is a ‘brave new world’, so are the attendant threats to security.
